How to do this? The walkthrough isn't really any help here. I've tried it lots of times and I get shot every time. Any neat tricks? cheats even? (preferably non-mod)

Missions like this is what ruins games for me. Not only is it a b**ch to get through, you also have to fly through half the system every few tries.

Get to the start point.
Aim your nose at the first waypoint.
Hit the "L" key
Keep throttle to the minimum setting.
Fly to the waypoint, and every new one that pops up as you make your way.
Don't worry about "crashing" into an asteriod. LDS protects you from less than planetary sized collisions.
Once you get the final waypoint, you are unrem'd back into your cockpit.

Linear Displacement Superstring. (I'm not sure on the S word)
You are displaced in time for your movement. I forget how this is supposed to really work. They mention it in the original I-War manual that came with the game. To travell great distances, your path is "compressed" in the time dimension. Hence the time compression indicator in I-War 1.

I could be totally wrong but that's what I though LDS stood for.

I think superstrings are part of a grand unified theory of the universe. a superstring is a two dimensional black hole. Instead of a singularity as a very heavy single point, a superstring is similar but has a length as well.

Someone told me this so....

I thought it was just linear displacement system. Another 'neat trick' to this mission is to detach your tfighters before you start, and have them distract the gunstars.
