Milky Way with a distant shot of the "Heavens Gate" nebula is OK for me. Only solar systems of which there is more light from the background then from the star itself looks so unnatural to me and give me more the feeling I am in a supersize aquarium

Okay, gotcha. Some people have had problems with the brightness before as well. Not sure how to calibrate that so well, since I have tried it on 3 different moniters and all the nebula show up quite dark to me. Well, dark enough to be believeable.
Follow the path GrandpaTrout mentioned before, then look for this kindof line near the top of the respective .lws file (named after whichever system is too bright for you)
AddNullObject <node class=icNebulaAvatar url=model||models|li_po|epic>
ShowObject 8 7

Just rip that right out and save and you should lose the nebula. Or, replace the first line of that section with this:
AddNullObject <node class=icNebulaAvatar url=model||models|farnorth|epic>
and you will have the milky way, rather than simply black empty space.
