Good argument. I have added this feature. It will stay zoomed out in director mode until you exit the station menu. Then it returns to normal view. A side effect is that during zoomed out view, your keybinds are all disabled. Which does keep you from firing shots by accident. You cannot undock until you exit the menu. Which works out fine, but feels a little different.
