freeplay Multiplayer

Is there a mode/ mod that allows two players to connect Via LAN and play the game in a freeform mode, so you can do things like: go pirating together, swap cargo, blow s*** up?

That would be the king of all multiplayer games. (has anyone played Diablo II, perchance? That's what I'm thinking of)
