Tried to set up a LAN game today as my son is very keen for some multiplayer I-war. Unfortunately it re-awakened the memory of not being able to get multiplayer to work the last time I tried. It is possible to to set up a host and play on your own, it was also possible to see a game on the other PC but not possible to join it. Any suggestions?

You should be able to play in a 2 party LAN with no problems whatsoever if both PCs can access files on the other PC via your LAN.

There are lots of possibilities:

Normally if your PC is the server you should also automaticly spawn as a player right after the server starts. Does that happen?

Make sure you have the same mod (or unmodded game) on both host and client and a multiplayer ship is selected on both PCs.

Make sure the client (sons PC) is seeing the LAN game ( use the button "LAN game") and not a possibly coexisisting internet game.

if none of the above work:

Try hosting on the client to see if you see the game on your PC (and can join it from there)

If you have a Firewall in your LAN you'll have to deactivate it (if it's WinXP) or open a bunch of ports

Most Common:
No ship is selected on the client

I've run out of guesses now. post more details if you still have problems

I sorted it.

My sons game was not not setup for direct play 8, which was working in dxdiag.

[FcGame]
network_device = dx8net.fcNetworkDeviceDP8 < was was not set for DP8

and

[fcNetworkDeviceDP8]
dplay_port = 2313 < was missing

I will check the firewall ports required now so I can tighten the rules up a bit.

That would mean your sons game wasn't patched to version 14.6 ???

It says it is 14.6

Those ports for the interested, test for the LAN game.

loader.exe searches for a LAN game on port 26900 UDP bidirectional
local ANY <> remote 26900 UPD is require to find a game on LAN

Hosting a LAN game requires the matching rule.
local 26900 <> remote any UDP

loader.exe runs the server on port 2313 and the client on port 2302. Both need UDP in and out.
local 2313 <> remote 2302 UDP for server
local 2302 <> remote 2313 UDP for client

To play on your own server requires both rules.

I havent got all the rules for the internet game.

To get the game list loader.exe connects out to 207.38.8.34 (master.gamespy.com) on port 28900 TCP
local ANY -> 207.38.8.34:28900 TCP

To send game details loader.exe connects to 207.38.8.34 (master.gamespy.com) on port 29910 UDP bidirectional
local ANY <> 207.38.8.34:29910 UDP

Since I couldn't sucessfully join the only game listed I can only guess at the ports required to play a game. Similarly no-one joined my game for the short time I ran it.

So far I have;

local ANY -> remote 1900 UDP
local ANY -> remote 2234 UDP

Jumbo, Thanks for writing down all this. Specially for the LAN game. It's quite helpfull.

In addition to the 2313 port and the UDP ports you need for a LAN game the link below shows you all the ports that have to be open for Gamespy to work:

www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml

further on down the page it even shows how to do the settings for a Norton firewall

Don't worry if you can't join some games. I've seen lots of people who have the old unpatched original F10 version running (and sometimes they apparently don't even notice they do for 2 or 3 days at a time)
