You do have one more AI entity you can use as a "limited capability" wingman: the "Self Defense Module".

It's a software module that will protect your ship while you're out running around and creating havoc with your REM fighter.

It actually does a rather good job of manouvering your ship around and shooting at any bad guys that might try to take advantage of the situation.
