Which kind of sim are you looking for?

If your looking for a realistic one, Orbiter is your best bet. You land a shuttle in that, you could land one for real. Or at least, if you practiced enough with the shuttle MFD, you could tell the real shuttle what to do, and might even have a small chance of not dying during the 30 seconds you have manual control. Its freeware last I checked. And there are mods for about every real spacecraft, as well as most speculative ones, and many sci-fi ones.

Underdogs have Shuttle, which is far older but models the shuttles systems in more detail. Only does shuttle though, you aint going to the moon in that one.

In it, I list over a dozen totally free space-sims that are either released or in development.

And now here's my list of often missed commercial space-sims.
  • Terminus - Top of the list. Very good, but nobody's ever heard of it and there's only about 3 fan sites. Basic gameplay, awsome! But lacks polish.
  • Jumpgate - Pretty cool, online only.
  • Bang! Gunship Elite - Eh, so so.
  • Battlecruiser 3000 series - Personally, I love them.
  • The Last Dynasty - A bit old, and only space-sim for half the game. But it's the only sim I've ever seen that allows you to actually plan attacks, and pause the game mid-battle to alter the attack plan. Most impressive.
  • Mankind - Not really a space-sim, more of a 4x. But it does have spaceships. Online only.
  • Protostar - Really old (Dos), but really cool.
  • Subspace - 2D top-down space shooter. Online only.
  • Tachyon: The Fringe - Bruce Campbell, that's all you need to know!
  • Klingon Academy - First-person bridge view tactical Star Trek capship combat. (Whew, say that five times fast.) But definitely more "space-sim" than Starfleet Command.
  • Star Wraith series
  • Further Time
  • Starlines - 4x again, economics in interstellar freight.
  • Ace of Angels - Like Eve, but combat only. Also on-line only.
  • DarkSpace - Like above.
And my list of not-so-often-missed commercial space-sims.
  • Starshatter - The amazing achievement of one man called Milo.
  • Bridge Commander - Like Klingon Academy, but more advanced.
  • Eve Online - Kind of dopey to list this after I've already refered to it.
  • Allegiance - By Microsoft, I think.
  • Star Lancer and Free Lancer
That's it for now. If I think of any more, I'll add them.

You missed a non-commercial one.

The Space Shuttle Simulator, at www.shuttlesim.be . It models the whole process, launch to landing. Complete with pretty smoke trails, full working panels with oodles of switches, and not-bad mission control voice chatter.

It has messages on the bottom of the screen that tell you what to do, and even pauses during critical switch-flipping so if you can’t find them in time, you don’t die. (Then again, crashing and burning hasn’t been implemented yet.)

Missions have yet to be programmed in, so the most you can do in orbit is play with the arm, the lights, and the TV cams, but it’s great fun anyways. Check it out.

Well, I didn't include it for two very good reasons:

1. It falls outside of my area of interest, so I wouldn't know about it.

2. andrewas already listed it. ;)

Nice description though. :)
