Breathing liquid for deep diving

I thought the sci-fi community might be interested in this. Especially GrandpaTrout, who really seems to like these obscure technologies.

Anybody familiar with the movie "The Abyss" may remember the liquid breathing diving equipment. Well, it's actually real! It hasn't been completely developed for use in diving yet (it's mostly for medical use), but they're working on it.

A very cool read. I wondered how they did the recirculation of fluid - air mixes and swirls about, but fluids tend not to. I hadn't thought about it before, but gills are designed to let the fluid flow over and past the fish. It does not move inside, stop, and then get pushed back out. It only requires a oneway pump. And the fluid cannot get "trapped" in the tiny air passages.

I actually read about the technology a few years ago in a physics book, so I already knew it was real.

...

The abyss was a good movie... I should go rent it. *wanders off*

All of us managed to live without breathing air. Ask your mothers:)
