Faction "Society"; What does it do?

Does anyone know how this faction is used? Anyone ever seen a ship or station with this faction?

While going through the factions, there are a couple which must exist to serve some special programming purpose (like the "Invalid" faction, which, I assume, is a catch-all when the faction can't be worked out). Is the Society faction something like this?

Or am I being too paranoid? Is it just a faction which didn't see much use in the game (like so many others)? Is there any way to find out?
