I-War (as it was originally known) was released in 1997 in Europe under the Ocean label (Though ocean were a part of Infogrames). It had approx 40 missions, and was software 3D only.

In 1998 it was re-released in the US, under the name Independence War, by Infogrames. (I-War was a copyright of Atari, so we couldn't use the original name. That's ironic, as Infogrames now own Atari!) This version supported 3Dfx glide graphics in addition to software mode. At the time 3Dfx 'owned' the 3D market and D3D was only just getting established, so it was a sensible decision then. The new version also included an Arcade mode, and tweaked missions.

In 1999 Independence War Deluxe Edition was released. This took the original game and added an all-new 18 mission campaign played from the enemy side, including improvements such as save points and extra weapons.

The I-War 1 based games were more 'sim-like' than I-War 2, and had a quirkier interface. The graphics were excellent for their time, and they had stunning CGI cutscenes that are still great to watch today. In particular the 15 minute intro movie is a work of art.

I always thought it was called I-War in Europe because the British were still sore over the Revolution. :D

The English don't generally keep grudges over events that happened centuries ago. :)
