I prefer type XII phasers and quantum torps...lol j/k
Usually for those quick strike/escort missions i prefer an advanced patcom loaded with Neutrons (and a quad light). I quite enjoy distruptors (or pulsars) to disable ships so they stay still. I also usually carry Turret fighters so i can better protect jafs or my assigned ship to escort.
Heavy Corvettes are basicly good for strong arming. I of course used it a lot after i got it...but i prefer the advanced patcoms manuverability over the Heavy Corvettes indurance. It all depends on the mission though i guess.

CHECK THIS GAME OUT!!!

speaking of heavy corvettes, where could you get one? patcom is amazing after the tug, great for dog fights, but i don't want only 3 ships in my hangar.
as to the subject of the post...
i'm still a newbie so i have crap stuff, but hey might as well enlighten you ppl hehe. on the patcom, 2 turret-fighters (loaded with 1 pbc each, and 12 missiles each), a twinpack launcher with 12 harrowers, and 3 quad-light pbcs. very efficient in dog fights.
one more thing. there's a mission you get some time in act 2, through an e-mail called "Proposition", sent by "The Third Man". you have to snipe out the windows on a station using a sniper cannon "The Third Man's" tug is carrying around on its back. After getting the ammo, you go to the station...and then...
Sniping implies zooming, and i think there is a module for zooming, ala maybe the imaging module. but what are the windows? i'm badly lost on this one.

You should be able to target the correct window on this mission, even while you're far enough out to not arouse the wrath of the patrols.

Aim for the waypoint marked 'target window' or something like that, your shot doesn't need to be perfect. its easy with the imaging module, but you don't need it. note that the module is a good investment regardless, how ever.
You eventually it the HC, if you are playing the third man mission, it shouldn't be too long now.
as far as crappy equipment, once you get to act 3, a whole bunch of really cool stuff becomes available really quickly, Deadshots in larger quantities, Pulsars, LDSi 3000, DeathBlows, all sorts of really cool stuff

btw, i'm lost. somewhere after corporate holdings, which i failed badly, and i haven't seen the oman yet. is that a bad thing?
tried out the heavy corvette in instant action, neutron pbcs are sweet. should just get rid of that quad light though. i'm guessing you can't get in the the single player?
