This is a necro, but...
The "Torn Stars"/"Unstable Space"/"Traffic" (can't find a d/l here for Traffic, might be at the Torn Stars site, just google it, but I dunno if they ever released a working version of it) conversion mod lets you be a "space trucker" just fine, if you like. Or pirate. Or whatevs.
