Hey, I forgot about these...

I was looking through some of my old EoC downloads and I came across two image file converters:

FTU2PCX.EXE
and
LBM2PCX.EXE

I downloaded them a long time ago but never used them. I just started playing with them and, WOW! Now I can see what all those images look like without trying to screw around renaming files to IFF, or trying to open as RAW and guessing the sizes. They'll even unpack all the mip maps.

I just wanted to recommend them to anybody interested in looking at the EoC images, since I've never heard them mentioned in the forums.

Here are some amusing samples:

FTUs converted to PCX, then saved as jpegs to show here.

So, now to my question. Does anyone know what the various LBM, FTU and FTC formats are for? I see the FTUs contain the mipmapped textures for things like avatars, but what are the FTCs for? And my avatar model textures turned into LBMs when they were converted, why is that? If I turn on the mipmap option on the converter will it give me FTUs? I'll have to try that and see what happens.

I don't know anything about LBM format, but FTU is an uncompressed image and FTC is a compressed image. The compression is discussed in the file format document. Both formats are based on the *.IFF data storage convention (originally designed by Electronic Arts if I understood the file format definition correctly) But they are not actually IFF files. Why did PS choose to use a slightly different standard, rather than the real standard? Who knows...

Thanks for posting about the FTU2PCX.exe! I don't know how I missed that. Very helpful.

Those are the originals of the ones we now have on the Casino station. Remember we talked about the casino named "Second Chance"?
(Look at the .iff files in StarWarsA1/images/sfx )

Where did you DL the FTU2PCX.exe? I never got it and had someone else convert those originals to iff so I could change them.

Most interesting for SW mod would be: does it also convert .iff back to .ftu?

I thought I downloaded them here. But if you can't find it, I'll send you mine (it's tiny).

Unfortunately, the conversion is one way only.

I looked through the mod tool but couldn't find it, so please send it.

Too bad we can't convert back, but we do have a workaround since we can establish the exact image size of a FTU after converting to PCX. (if the .iff is exactly the right size it works just as well in the game)

Okey Dokey. You should have them now.

Remember we talked about the casino named "Second Chance"?

Oh hell yeah, I remember! I've always wanted a casino! I can't wait to see it :D. I wish I still had the original aircraft nose art that the name came from. It was very cool.
